Please check your receipts when buying fuel from the CEPSA opposite Carrefour in Playa Flamenca. I bought petrol today. Obviously the amount you are now paying is less than displayed at the pump, so overcharges are not often noticed. On my receipt was a 2.10€ charge for Coca Cola. I went back in the shop and he gave me the 2.10 in cash. This happened to me some months ago, a bottle of water that time. I confess that I do not always check the bill. I think this has been going on since the government discount. I mentioned it to the customer services at Carrefour. CEPSA is not part of Carrefour, but she knows the manager and will report it to him. She took a copy of my receipt. Please report if this happens to you. If it carries on, I will somehow inform CEPSA head office. How much have they been stealing, I dread to think!

Another trick is with "not regulated" gas bottles, where every reseller can fix his price and you never know until you pay. Some employees overcharge a few euros for their own benefit. To override this insist in paying by credit card. If they insist in cash, look elsewhere.

Hello

RE - Gas bottles,  Not really 'a trick' as killjoy says.... I recently renewed my - once a year gas bottle, & in advance,  asked inside how much it would be.

If the price is acceptable to you, go ahead, if not, you can try somewhere else

Cheers

Hi Sheila64,

So just to be clear, Cepsa didn't overcharge you for the fuel, but added an item to your bill that you hadn't bought, i.e. the cola?

I'm surprised they can get away with that - unless they don't have the type of tills which scan bar codes?

Sounds like it may be specific to staff at that station, rather than Cepsa-wide, but definitely one to look out for when I'm buying fuel.  Thanks for the warning.

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi Kim,

I hope all is well with you. Yes, I only bought petrol, nothing else. You can tell by the response you get when you go back. They know before you tell them, and refund with cash, no questions asked. I posted on FB to warn others, and it is quite evident from many replies that this is quite widespread, as CEPSA at Campoamor was also mentioned. It appears to be drinks, food etc. When the total you pay at the till is less than the pump, how many customers check their receipt? I am sure it is not all the staff, and it is a shame because I particularly like that petrol station. However, I hate dishonesty, and this was sneaky. I now feel that I will have to shop elsewhere, but will always check my receipt. Enjoy the rest of this beautiful weekend, Kim. 😎

This is a old con that's been around for years but more so these days though. What the scrupulous cashier does is to charge for an item such as a bottle of coke in the hope that the customer does not check their receipt and then they just process a "dummy refund on the till" and pocket the difference.

I guess it would be a nice little earner over a full days shift. It's happened to me before but I always check my receipt.

Regards

Gary

Thanks Sheila. That's why I was wondering about the type of till they have - I can imagine it would be hard to spot a cashier pressing an extra couple of buttons on the till, but would they be able to scan a barcode on an item without me spotting them doing it?  I'm going to have to check all my receipts now! 😄

Best wishes,

Kim

The counter and till are high up, so you can’t possibly see what they are pressing. I think there is a plastic screen in front of it too, It is also a Carrefour Express and therefore we are able to use their club card for points.
