Hi, this may or not be of help but I have been learning for about 10 years and can hold a conversation and all I did was buy CD's. It is a Simon & Schusters course by Pimsleur and each lesson is 30 minutes long. You repeat the phrases and only move onto the next lesson when you are happy you have answered 80% of the present lesson although I am more stringent with myself. I either go on my runner or cross trainer for 30 minutes with head phones (Can do any exercise) and do the lesson at the same time. Waste none of my day, have 30 minutes exercise and learn Spanish at my own pace. OK, I will not learn what a verb is or an adjective but then I don't know that in English he he. It works for me and when I am in England it means I am still using my Spanish everyday albeit for 30 minutes. I always listen to a CD in my office first and write the new words down transferring them to excell so I have something to look back on should I forget a word but both activities could get boring alone, but together it works. My attitude has alwaays been it doesn't matter if it takes me 6 months or 16 years to learn Spanish as long as I learn. I think the main thing is WANTING to learn and if you have that you will learn whatever path you take. Good Luck!

I totally agree with you, and it couldn't have been put any better. Everyone is different, and what works for one person doesn't always work for someone else. There is so much to learn and Rome wasn't built in a day. If you want to learn a language then you will, albeit at your own pace. It is certainly worth the effort. Anybody who says otherwise is bonkers! It's good to hear from people like yourself who are actually achieving, and I am sure it gives a boost to would-be learners.

Its a pleasure and just to endorse my position I was always one of those people amazed at people who could talk another language and so when I was opening my mouth and making these noises and people were understanding me it seem incredible. Once you start learning you will have little times of self achievement that make you feel so good about yourself. It may be just ordering a Roll on the beach in Spanish or something very little, but you will certainly have a massive sense of achievement. Once you start you will enjoy it whatever way you learn and it also gives you a massive sense of respect for the country you are in. Total respect to you for trying. Good Luck

I agree with all the positive comments about trying to learn the language of the country you live in. Whatever stage you achieve, the only thing I can add is then go out and use it with the Spanish. Generally they are happy to include you in the conversation by slowing down ensuring you are keeping up. Your vocabulary will increase if not perfect grammar. Very good luck. Do not be put off by those who can not be bothered.
