Once they get their NIE it lasts. Better sooner than later, because when they need it for inheritance, all of a sudden there are time limits to be considered, and bureaucracy being what it is, not having the nie ready may prove expensive.

Your NIE number, once obtained, is equivalent to UK (National Insurance), US (Social Security), Irish (PPS/PRSI), and does NOT have an expiry date.

No, NIE does not have an expiration date, as I said, NIE lasts, as you say also - which is why there is no risk getting it sooner rather than later.
It is better to get it sooner because what does have time limits is things the ones who inherits need to take care of after death, and starting the NIE process at that time, risk is they won't get their NIE within the necessary time, because of the bureaucracy, which may prove costly for the people who inherit.
Was this really not clear in my initial reply? 🥄
