I am on the understanding a housing development with commercial outlets that has been on the cards for years. This may also include a footbridge crossing the N332.

Thanks for the answer

A bridge there would be helpful. I don’t think I’ll be back until April so it will be interesting to see how far it’s come on.

That one has been started for sure 20 years ago, maybe longer, I remember seeing the first works when here on holiday lots of hair ago and none of it was grey.....

It then went bust and became abandoned waste land but it has been resumed indeed, very likely a new promoter. Work seems to have been proceeding quite a lot in the past few weeks but it's still mainly clearance work. In the days it was supposed to be an urbanizacion, it should be the same now but there aren't panels advertising anything.

It’s for 1500 plus apartments . Will ruin the only bit of coastal view in the area . Together with the traffic congestion, demand on utilities, drainage etc , will devastate the area . Don’t think they have such a thing as an environmental impact statement in Spain otherwise it wouldn’t have got planning . Then again a bung to Orihuela council might help

It's not only Orihuela, in Torrevieja work has already started in the area east of El Chaparral going towards Habaneras for another big urbanizacion so even more congestion and demand on services....

According to English language press the Orihuela council have been fiercely opposing this development that received all permissions decades ago.  They are now compelled to allow the development because of the threat of being sued for many millions.

It was my undestanding having been in the area for 20 years that all building was stopped years ago due to an endangered specie, either plant/s or animal that are on that land.

There was an investigation I seem to remember.

However, the Spanish are not know for that kind of protection and money talks, just like what is going on in many countries, in the UK endless Tower blocks being built, who wants to live in them? Its front line so the best will be built facing the sea and the others, maybe a side-on view. There are still thousands of unsold homes all across the Valencian region, yet still they can't stop building. Greed and yet more greed. The roads are now getting bad and very congested, lack of infrastructure etc etc, but that's okay.

Sad indeed for the coast and all who live there - we sold up this year because of this overbuilding
