Well, kimmy, he doesn’t have money to burn but as I’m sure you are aware, there has been a lot of conflicting information about the efficiency of face masks and since the U.K. has not even begun to experience the worst of this virus, he is doing what he feels makes him comfortable for him and his family. He did explain to me about these masks and how well they work, but I’m not sure if I could relay the details properly, but when I speak to him again I will pass on any relevant information to anyone who is interested

I admire your brother for making the effort to purchase masks for himself and his loved ones.

Somebody posted the most fascinating post with a link to watch a journalist interviewing a top virologist in Korea about the way they have dealt with the Coronavirus pandemic. One of the things he said was that everyone must wear a mask!  No too ways about it. The explanation given as to why we in the western world aren’t wearing them was simple...the governments all knew that we did not have enough. If we had been told that they were vital,we would have all bought them and left the NHS shorter than they are now...and they still don’t have enough.

Another utube interview with an American disease investigator ( another top scientist) told that all medicines are made in China....and all the protective equipment needed is also manufactured in Wuhan  and as you all know, there has been a great shortage of some drugs and PPE’s.   This guy also said that masks were our first defence against the virus.

Check out President George Bush’s speech back in 2005 where he states that the governments must be prepared for a pandemic which would come.....clearly no country other in Europe was prepared apart from Germany.  Korea was prepared because they have already had numerous killer ‘flus in the past 20 years. The USA certainly did not take the advice given by Pres.Bush.

I am not particularly impressed by the strategy being used in UK or Ireland. They saw this virus coming and should have closed all flights and tourism into the country but they left it too late. Both islands could have been virus free. We are losing so many of our older population and many of our young too. This is all happening while we are staying at home and social distancing. All too late....Cheltenham races....madness.  Football against Spain with plane loads of people coming from a country that has an epidemic.  Endless mistakes and mistakes are still being made, School skiing trips to Italy....dreadful error of judgement in today’s world of technology. Everyone knew but people stuck their heads in the sand and some still are.

This will take a year unless we can get a vaccine.  There’s no way out.

Hi Patsy,

I hope they're worth the money 👍

To wear or not to wear a face mask is an interesting subject.  In the Far East, it's been commonplace to wear face masks for decades - because of frequent and significant air pollution.

With respect to the Covid-19 pandemic, the World Health Organisation does not recommend the wearing of face masks, unless an individual is a frontline healthcare worker, has symptoms of the disease or is caring for someone with the disease.  The primary concern is that they're unlikely to fit properly, resulting in the wearer unconsciously touching their face to adjust them, with the potential to inadvertently transfer the virus to the eyes, nose or mouth.  The WHO is also concerned that masks provide a false sense of security, with the potential for people to become less vigilant about more important hygiene measures, such as hand washing.

If your brother is set on wearing a mask, it would be worth him knowing how to put it on and take it off, so you may want to share this with him:

https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/advice-for-public/when-and-how-to-use-masks

Depending on the type of mask he's bought, it will either have to be replaced, or sanitised after each use.

Kind regards,

Kim

I use a hanky, (or tissue) but without the elastic. If someone (or me) sneezes on or near my tissue, I dispose of it (safely). I do not want to strap it to my mouth, nose( & continue inhaling) or near my eyes & leave it there.

Well done! Isn’t it amazing the things that please us nowadays!

I ordered 2 tons of stones to tidy up the beds in the garden. I ordered a roll of black membrane which arrived by courier a couple of weeks ago. My husband and I started on a large area before Easter. I set 2 wooden seats on top and it looks wonderful. Easter came and went and we didn’t do any outdoor work but today I was informed that we needed to do some more. Not too excited about that but with no choice, off I went. I have managed to cover another large area and shovelled mountains of stones into the wheelbarrow   ( my husband has a bad back so I insisted) and now he is inside making the lunch while I am sitting in this wonderful sunshine loving every minute of it.

Did I tell you that I ordered a skip as well? The garage is now looking respectable. 5 bicycles and a snooker table have been unearthed along with skate boards, roller boots and a sleigh. The skip was filled and collected and the garage is now respectable.

If either of us dies, the family won’t have tooooooo much to do clearing out a lifetimes hoardings. My son’s fabulous Raleigh mountain bike is like new ( he is 37 now)

and once this self isolation ens, my 2 grandchildren from London will have a field day going through all the playthings we kept.

Our next big job is the WEE HOUSE,  it’s a shed full of one of my daughter’s possessions when she moved back from London.  Full of cds , Photobooks, clothes, a small tumble drier and a million more things.  They will all be cleared and I plan to paint The Wee House white and put a big rug on the floor and kids pictures on the walls. This will be all ready for the kids when they come over. It will be renamed by them as Granny’s wee house!

Now you know what I am up to.

What are you people doing with all this time on your hands?  Please tell.

Best wishes,

Grannyrose

While Waiting (They promised they will arrive now)  we have been using the tea towels 37x37cms folded 3 times with the doggy pee absorbent cut into 3 without the plastic backing. this gives 8 layers!! and with the elastic cut from the hem of an old jacket. It is a really good fit, no steaming up of glasses etc. On arrival after epic trips to vet/supermarket etc.tea towels/elastic in disinfectant for a few hours, Doggy absorbant in bin with gloves etc. 8 tea towels came with our table cloth, as there are 2 of us no probs with washing after sanitizing  I found I have roll of 0.5mm clear plastic 30cms wide, ideal for stapling onto the inside of a baseball cap should things get worse rather than better with the proposed and present relaxation of the state of alarm.

Hi, you may find this useful if you are able to sew, or know anyone who can.

This is a sewing pattern for face masks - I’m just about to knock a few up this afternoon using a pillow case

Pillow case ! ?

Bit big isn’t it 😂😂😂
