I totally agree but every EU country turned a blind eye plus I myself bought into this 3 times ovet the last 30 years, to be honest its the EU that are enforcing they are wanting to make an example of us to stop other countries from leaving thats my thoughts anyway, this is going to take years to smooth out we are in for a bumpy ride for a while 😔😔

I don't think you can say Spain have suddenly moved to enforce the new rules because for Brits, firstly it is not Spain that changed the rules for Brits but Britain who changed the position for Brits; and secondly everyone had four and half years notice that the UK was leaving the EU, with Mrs May stating early on that leaving the EU would include leaving the Single Market. Spain has always enforced the rules for third countries. With ETIAS coming online next year, a lot of overstaying Brits would have been caught out anyway then.

ETIAS will tighten EU rules anyway from next year, that has been in the pipeline for years.  The responsibility for the current situation lies firmly with the UK government, and you are right, it will takes years to smooth out. However the EU are treating the UK in exactly the way the UK has requested to be treated, ie treating the UK as a non-EU country - that isn't making an example of the UK, it is respecting the decision of the UK to become non-members.

Blame Brexit not the Spanish government, the UK agreed to these rules when they were EU members.

Nearly half of Brits... me included didn’t agree nor wanted Brexit! I get very irritated when I hear Brits agreed... and I’m pretty sure that when many see what Brexit really meant they will wish they voted differently!!

My life time dream of living the ‘Med Dream’ has been made very difficult and I don’t appreciate that puts all Brits ‘under the same umbrella’

My umbrella was meant to be a Sun Shade!!!

During the 1970s/1980s Brits in their millions came to Spain, transforming it from a Third World agricultrial/fishing country ruled by a Hitler supporting fascist to a tourist-led sunshine destination and much of the south Spain employment/infrastructure was built on the back of this change. These tourists eventually became non-resident owners because of their fondness for Spain. I feel the Spanish authorities don't have a valid replacement for this income and as such have not thought this through thus are going along with the Pro-remain/left leaning narrative of punish the Brits but without an answer to who, how or what will fill the fiscual gap. If the EU dominant states (France/Germany) don't come up with the cash for the southern states they no doubt will want to look for their old and known British customers but by then the damage may have been done as properties get sold plus nobody wants to stay where they don't feel wanted. Spain does not have exclusivity on sunshine - Turkey for example is chomping at the bits for UK tourism.

The Brits have always had a love affair with Spain as long I can remember....

I drove to Spain in 1989 as a 21 year old and spend a blissful Summer working and partying... fond memories!

When I was finally in a position to buy my Spanish dream... a house with my hubby on La Cumbre early 2020, we didn’t expect a Pandemic to halt the start of our Happy Times. I managed a 26 hour drive from the U.K. in July last year with company of my teenager and on arrival it felt like ‘89 again.. I was elated! My hubby flew a few days later to ‘Quarantine’ when we returned home. Our only trip! Brexit has happened but I hope both countries can agree a ‘Happy Ending’.

No matter what... we make a good team....

Hi Kevin the weath tax is non residenti tax.

Yes which is supposed to be illegal under EU law - we've been paying it for 17 years.  In a way I can see the sense of it though. If home owners don't want to become residents there has to be a way of getting the money from them to pay for infrastucture, public lighting, sewage, road upkeep to name but a few. I don't have a problem with that.

Rubbish!
Spain needs money like most countries especially after the pandemic and if you can prove you have enough they are not going to turn you away!

No matter what peoples views are re Brexit I am sure a lot of turkeys voted for christmas, all this about the british immigrants being the main drivers in the economy this is not fact checked to show their limited value across all of spain excluding the Costas it was relatively simple to avoid all this exit problems be a resident, pay your income tax, if applicable get your SIP, get on the pardon, change your driving license then it would not have been an issue when we came out of the EU agree or disagree denarda

Bizarre statement. I have made my decision about where I want to live and it is the UK. That does not stop me from wanting a home somewhere else for me and my family to enjoy!
