Hello Ray,

Unfortunately this does not seem to fit my scenario either. We have not bought any property in Spain for well over ten years and even then it was bought from a resident who died a year or so later.

I am sure all taxes and levies were paid at the time. If something was wrong they have taken one hell of a long time to come looking. They must be getting desperate to go back that far.

Thanks for your contribution. I promise to let everyone know the true answer when I get it.

Understand IVA, Retentions & Income Tax - Limit ConsultingLimit ConsultingThis is a word coming from the Spanish “Retenciones” meaning “with-held tax”. Essentially this is a part of the payment owed to somebody else that is with-held in order to pay the other's income tax. ... 3) Tenants with-hold part of the rent due to the owner in order to pay the owner's income tax.
Hi just thought this might help.

Many thanks for all the replies over the years since I first posted the question.

The matter was solved a couple of years ago when I kicked Bankinter into touch and went to another bank.

I think we can close this now.
