So I'm just wondering Cheryl or anybody for non residents is there any bank free 🙄 or at least which is the cheapest in that scenario thanks.

Have you read my earlier replies on this subject? I have recommended Cajamar many times, free internet account for non residents. You just need to read my replies in this post and many more in "Banking"

Regards

Pauline.

Hi Meath,

I’m with Bankinter and they charge 100 euro a year I’m non resident 😖

Hi

Just yesterday, we got a statement from Bankinter outlining the charges we incurred for 2019.

We are Non residents, joint bank account.

Maintenance 52.50€

plus Debit Card 25€ =  Total 77.50€

Perhaps online banks are going to become the better option if charges increase?

Regards

Maria

€36.30 non residency management fee

2x€30 Administration Commission

And that's online

Yes, thanks very much Pauline, I remembered your previous posts and they are on my reading list. We will be going in to Cajamar tomorrow as I need to make sure that someone is available who speaks English in the local branch as my Spanish is not up to such discussions and from speaking to one of my existing banks I am now aware I have not been offered the same deal as another member on here. I need to make sure that the same offers will be made to me with our own circumstances and usage of the account. If they are, we will open an account with them there and then because although I use online banking for very basic things, I'm not very computer savvy so need to have counter service from time to time.

Hi Cheryl

I'm a 64 year old with residencia and I have a Sabadell Expansion account, so I was not pleased to hear about the new 5 euros a month charge.

However, having looked into it extensively, I've decided to bite the bullet and stay with Sabadell for the time being. I have many direct debits and a credit card, not to mention companies like Transferwise who use my Spanish account number. The hassle of changing all that and the potential for things going wrong is just not worth it. When my UK state pension kicks in next year, I will have it paid direct to Sabadell and will expect them to drop the charges.

There is no mention of buying insurance from them in the t&cs I've read. You could get the Premium account but again the stipulations like having ten thousand euros invested with them is just not worth it to save 60e per annum. However, if this is the thin end of the wedge and Sabadell start cranking up the charges, they will lose my custom.

Finally, you are paying too much for house insurance. In my first year I used Sabadell to get a reduction in my bankers draft for house purchase, but I dropped them as soon as I could. I now have 210k buildings and 20k contents cover which costs 247e pa. Its with Liberty Seguros via broker Grand Alacant Insurances. Check them out, the guy there (Alfonso) is superb, a top professional in everything he does.

Good luck.

Hi Hereford jack! Are you sure you will get your oap next year? At the present time you will not get yours until you are 66 years old! But the conservative government want to make it even older 🤞I hope not as I am 64 today and gutted I have to wait until I’m 66.

My wife has to wait until she’s 66🤦🏻‍♂️ She should have been getting it for over a year already! Anyway good luck.

Hi Herefordjack, the quote I am going for is with Liberty Seguros via Gran Alacant Insurance. There are so many variables to take into account along with different excesses so premiums aren't really comparable and the fact that I have no immediate neighbours and am out in the campo probably has an affect and I want cover for the swimming pool, pump, outbuildings and adding All Risks which will include cover for landslip which many of the others didn't include. My villa is on a kind of promontory with a large balsa behind and above us and if that overflowed we would be in trouble, we also have a steep drop to one side, so even more important for us.

Hi Kevman

I'm 65 in May this year, so yes, there'll be hell to pay if I don't start getting my UK state pension in May next year when I reach 66!

Cheers

If I might digress slightly from the main topic of this thread for a moment and go on to the UK state pension.

I did have a brief look at the paperwork involved when you have to claim it for the first time from the UK authorities as a British citizen who is a full time resident of Spain. I only gave it a cursory glance because it's still 15 months away for me, but the form did seem to want all sorts of detail which I'm sure isn't required if you start claiming it as a UK resident. Stuff like full employment history, divorce history, etc, etc.

Can anyone who has gone through this process advise us on here exactly what is involved? Thanks.

EDIT: actually, please don't reply to this request in this thread, I'm going to take up someone's suggestion to start a new thread on it.
