Because of money laundering Banks won't open up accounts for non residents . ( Having spoken to a Spanish lawyer, they can, but prefer not to.) Thankyou for the update.  I have a Wise account.  The Spanish banks thus far turn me down because i have no salary income, i explained I am on nlv and work of any kind in spain is banned, yet Spanish Authorities insist I must have Spanish Bank account.  My lawyer is trying to resolve the issue.

Hi, have you obtained your NIE? You will need this before opening an account here in Spain. I have a Wise account and had the same problem with Vegafibra a while ago. I found opening an account with Banco Sabadell quite straight forward, just be aware of their fees! Free banking isn’t a thing here in Spain.

I changed 6 direct debits recently from a Sabadell account to an eu based bank account in Ireland.

They were immediately accepted by all 6 Spanish companies including Hidraqua, Avatel and SUMA.

There is no problem changing to an eu based bank.

Can I ask how many digits your WISE IBAN ? Mine is 16, belgian IBAN. The person in the Avatel office said he has 20 spaces that is why I gave him my Sabadell IBAN.. I also would like to close my Sabadell because there is no point to have it when I have WISE.

It is a smart move to close Spanish bank accounts, the more that do it fron uk, the spanish may then see the volume of business they are losing.  Telfy so far are only company that accepted belgian iban from wise.  All my other accounts including suma I pay online by Wise card or transfer, my lawyer is trying to sort out the rejections by other spanish authorities for direct debits.  It is strange as iberdrola requested and accepted DD from wise for solar panel installation, but rejected it for electricity bill and rebate for electricity i put into the grid from solar panels can only be paid into Spanish bank????  It does not make sense

Don't close a Spanish bank account. They are difficult enough to open.

It must be personal to me then!  Anyway the thread was not about wise, it was a query if other forum members had problems opening a spanish bank account.

Thanks anyway on comments on wise

Hi

We are not residents of Spain and opened a bank account with our local BBVA. We always find the counter staff friendly and helpful and have never regretted transferring from Sabadell to BBVA. We had no problem with setting up the direct debits, which we did ourselves, as BBVA counter staff explained that their switch service would not be as reliable as doing the job ourselves. We welcomed their honesty

Sue
