In many cases it would be unworkable.

I have a holiday home in Spain but reside in the UK.

How do I allow my Daughter to stay there ? I can't visit the police station in Spain to apply for this document.

I would like to know this too, why are things so complicated!!

my mum and sister have just returned to the uk after staying at my house in Benissa for the last 2 weeks and they were not asked for prove of anything about were they were staying, i have 7 more people coming to stay at my house in Benissa for 2 weeks, i will let you know how they get on, i think it will be no problem as uk citizens don't need visa's to come here, unlike Turkey.

It isn't complicated, you don't have to do it.

My son is an American citizen and is hoping to fly directly into Spain to visit me for a few days. I am legally resident in Spain. Will I have to get this invitation letter for him, I am unsure as to whether or not he needs a visa.

Hi Diana,

As Spain is a member of the Schengen Agreement, U.S. citizens can visit here for up to 90 days without a visa.  Your son's passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the end of his stay.  You'll see from the link below to the Spanish government website that the 'Carta de Invitacion' is ONE of the documents that border control MAY ask for, but he MUST have a return airline ticket and be able to prove sufficient funds for his stay:

http://www.exteriores.gob.es/Portal/en/ServiciosAlCiudadano/InformacionParaExtranjeros/Paginas/RequisitosDeEntrada.aspx

These are the rules for Third Country Nationals that UK citizens now have to comply with too, although the British Embassy has said that, for the time being, Spain is not enforcing the requirement for the invitation letter.  In your situation, you or your son could ask the American Embassy to advise you.

Kind regards,

Kim

If somebody can make sense of this latest nonsense please enlighten me

If you own a home and come here on holiday how can you get a letter from the local police allowing you to stay in your own home ?

I’ve asked my lawyer who says this is not happening yet but she think it will in future

To what end I ask? Hotels Airbnb private rentals etc all have to go to the police and and get letters for all  their guests. And incur the costs  Is this a joke ???

Good luck with the local police too

Absolute lunacy
