I've done a guide covering the chemicals:

https://www.costablancaforum.com/area/almorad%C3%AD-spain-11/general-almorad%C3%AD-discussion-9/jims-guide-private-swimming-pools-part-1-theory-60595/

With a newly filled pool, and using liquid chemicals, you'll find that the chlorine will soon burn off in hot weather because the water doesn't contain any stabiliser. Either add stabiliser as well as chlorine, or use something like 3-in-1 tablets that include this. Read my guide for more detail on this and other features.

Good advice from Ray, I would use testing strips rather than a pool testing kit though.
