Hi,

I have not done it either but here is a guide from Spanish-Number-Plates that may help:

https://www.spanish-number-plates.com/taking-your-car-back-home/

I still have the UK number plates for my car I had planned (if/when I take the car back)just to refit them, get a MOT and insurance then the road tax. Not sure if that's how it will work though.

Depending upon your future plans it may be worth de-registering the car from the Spanish system as well.

Rgds,

Aitch.

Not sure it's quite as simple as that, but it will no doubt be far simpler than changing to Spanish. No doubt you have to contact DVLA and there will be some import paperwork to sort. When you exported the vehicle it will have been removed from the DVLA records as permanently exported.

Hi,

your probably right, I'm no doubt being naive to think it could be so simple, though not sure how they can they tax me on a car that I bought in the UK in the first place.

Hi,

I did find the attached on the Gov.UK website:

----------------------------------------

HMRC CARS team
[email protected]

If you previously owned the vehicle in the UK

You may be able to pay less import duty and VAT if you’re importing a vehicle you previously owned in the UK. You must have paid VAT on it when you first bought it.

To apply, send the following with your import declaration:

  • a completed form C179B
  • evidence that you previously owned the vehicle in the UK
  • a copy of the current registration document from the country of export
Transfer of residence

If you are transferring your normal place of residence to the UK, you may be able to apply for transfer of residence (TOR) relief.

To apply, include your TOR unique reference number or approval letter, and the date the vehicle arrived in the UK with your import declaration.

--------------------------------------------------

Try emailing them to ask the question on tax and vat. I don't see that the length of time the car has been in Spain has any relevance. If you bought the car in the UK and did not claim any tax back on export then what are they taxing?

Cheers thought it was just a step to far to pay tax on a car I’ve had already payed tax on, taking into account the double taxation treaty to boit

I have done exactly this with no problems and no costs.

I can't remember the exact procedure but the DVLA website detailing vehicle importation was extremely clear and, as I had kept the original number plates, my car went back on those.

I do however recall that it requires a visit to a "local" DVLA office.

Good Luck.
