Is there a wind blowing when you hear these noises, as we have an area where I live in Britain called the chasms, depending on which way the wind is blowing when it blows between the cracks in the cliff face it can sound like an injured dog howling, or a ghostly moan.

I did wonder that. When it's windy I do hear it but not always. It's very calm at the moment, no wind and I can hear it. It's not constant, it comes and goes but it is the sort of noise wind would make when blowing through a small gap!! That's really thrown a spanner in the works...

We live near Juanita's. The sound might be the little town hall cleaning truck. It has some sort of hybrid electric motor. When the brakes are applied, it squeels, and sometimes it sounds like a tube train slowing down.

I haven't heard any strange animals around.

Thanks for your reply but don't think it's that as I've seen and heard that. The noise definitely comes from the Jumerca supermarket way, that direction.

Does it repeat either three or four times, stop, and then repeat? If so, it's a hoopoe. If not, then I've no idea.

I'll google the sound the hoopoe makes and let you know! As the sound seems to come from the same place every time and it seems to be quite far I'm not sure I'd hear the sound as loudly as I do.

I live in the old part of campoverde, about a 5 min walk from Juanitas, Don Pepe etc. I keep hearing a noise that I've heard for the last year or so and was wondering if anyone could enlighten me as to what it is. It seems to come from the direction of the supermarket and bank but it's difficult ...

...to pin point as the sound travels. It's like a high pitched whoooooooooo, at first I thought it was a dog but it's not a typical dog whine or howl. Do peacocks make this sort of noise? Again, not the noise I've heard peacocks make! Any funny comments I'll take in my stride but some serious answers would be helpful!

Me too!! I have been asking my husband for ages about this! I live near there too and I hear it all the time! It is like a mournful wailing, certainly not a hoopoe, which goes sort of poop, poop!! Not the knife grinder nor the bread man! I have also thought that it is an animal, but not really like a dog howling, or not any dog I’ve ever heard. It doesn’t happen at night. It does sound like someone pretending to be a ghost! 😂😂😂but it can’t be. I live quite near Jumerca and I thought it was coming from the campo. No help really except now you know you’re not going mad !!!

It's definitely not the hoopoe bird!

Ha ha, good description of the ghost noise, hadn't thought of that. Glad I'm not the only one who hears it. Now all I've got to do is find out the source of the noise. Might have to get on my bike next time I hear it and try to track it down.

I think it may be the vicar on the staircase with the candle stick.

Sorry but I’ve been watching this thread and I’m really intrigued to find out what this noise is and I don’t live anywhere near there.

Lol. Well would you believe it the noise has stopped!! Haven't heard it all for over a week now so maybe someone was following this who was making the noise and didn't realise it was so loud. Now all I want to know is why is there a man walking a donkey around?? 😜

Is it like a clicking noise that goes on all night? We have a bird that does this all night - it is driving me mad!!

No it’s not a clicking sound, it was more like a moaning sound. It is unlikely that the clicking is a bird as there are few nocturnal birds, but it could be an insect?
