Hi I was wondering has anyone changed there bank due to high service charges each month and which is the easiest way to do this as bankia is charging 14 euro a month-168 euro a year,

Does anyone know which Spanish banks do not charge a monthly service charge?

Which is the easiest way to change direct debits etc was we all know to get things done in Spain. can be a tad difficult to say the least when you are not a native speaker.

Kind regards Gerard.

Hi there

Yes, I certainly agree.  I have my mortgage with them and am only using them for essentials ie mortgage and am in process of moving my utilities.  I also have a BBVA account and that is fab!!  I shop, pay bills and do all sorts and I don't remember ever being charged.  I see recently that I have a E28 charge for my debit card but that is fine when comparing to Bankia.  Hope this is helpful

I would switch from Bankia regardless. They have been extremely awkward in my experience.  I cannot close a joint account I had with my deceased father unless he signs a form🤔(not sure how I'm supposed to do that) or I get a Spanish solicitor which will cost significantly more than is in the account. Meanwhile,  I have to put money into the account to cover the charges. We have visited the branch,  emailed and written to no avail.

I have had very similar dealings with Bankia at La Zenia, I have been trying to close my account since January but of course they want to see me in person, Covid currently prevents this or they say I could give someone Power of Attorney.

Actually my Solicitor does have my POA but even she has had trouble with them.

I have emptied the account and the charges continue to rack up, my Solicitor says that Bankia is merging with Caixa and that unused accounts will be closed down.

Just as an aside, forum member at Cabo Roig branch was able to close his account whilst still in the UK done via his online banking, La Zenia branch do not want to know and are extremely unhelpful.

I closed my father's account by attending the branch with his death certificate.  The certificate was Spanish which may have made it easier because they recognised what it was straightaway.  If the Certificate is a UK one you will almost certainly need an official translation to present to the bank.  My experience and understanding is that a joint account is fully closed when one of the account holders dies, you can't just remove a name from an account as you can in the UK, so if you still have utilities to pay then you will need to open an account in your own name first and set up the new direct debits.  Good luck.

We have a hone in playafkamenca we need to check on. We are hoping to travel after Christmas. We will be taking the ferry from Ireland to Bilbao. I have been told there are curfews. Driving down would mean we get there around 12 midnight. Would we be wiser getting a hotel en-route??
