So if I want this formalised before Brexit what do I need to ask my Spanish Solicitor for ? Is it foreigners register signup or residencia or tax residency ? It is not simply a case of “I want to become a resident of Spain” - I would strongly advise that you read Jim’s guide regarding this subject. If you simply have a holiday home in Spain which you visit at various periods throughout the year, then it is highly unlikely that your trips to Spain will be affected post Brexit - the Spanish can ill afford to deter visitors, as their economy would collapse in a mesmeric way!

Just want to reply to Steve's comment saying the Spanish economy will collapse if they upset the British visitors.I have lived in Spain for 33 years, had a business here & am"in with the bricks".But it is ,in my opinion,a very wrong idea to think that we British are the main supporters of Spanish wealth. However I have only lived in the north of Costa Blanca where the British are not so prominent, although there are a fair number in Benidorm. My town has much more affluent Scandinavians,Dutch & German residents,we British are very much the poor cousins.Have recently sold my property & had, apart from Spanish, mostly well heeled lookers from mostly the Baltic States even a Russian agent seeking properties for their cash customers.I was aware that there are many eastern europeans established locally in good businesses,my computer wizard is from Latvia & I had a Romanian lady handling a rental property I owned. It may not be a thought we British want to acknowledge but I really believe we may soon be quite low down in the pecking order soon.
