That is true; N26 webiste now asks for a Spanish phone number, address and Spanish ID or NIE, which I am still waiting for.

While I do have 3 different passports and connections to other countries, I am currently based in UK. Online research in German does provide different results. When you type in English, you are provided only with information relevant to UK citizens and Brexit. ...

...

But I am comfortable telling a small untruth, after all politicians and executives do without any guilt, so why not.

Today I have found a Spanish lawyer who has confirmed I can open ES N26 bank account for property purchase :)

Well done Gab

You don't need a Spanish bank account. You do need an account with an online bank with a EU IBAN though. Many on here say open an account with WISE and there are many others that you can use. This is so she can pay her bills and direct debits where UK banks are not accepted.

WISE will also give you a card to make cash withdrawals whilst in Spain but any UK bank allows that but, apparently , WISE gives a better exchange rate....

...

If she gets a Spanish account as non resident she will be hit very hard with banking charges here in Spain. WISE and the others don't make those charges.

Good advise..... stay clear of Spanish Banks

In Spain ,as in other EU countries ,by law ,all are supposed to accept all EU IBANs,some in Spain still insist on a Spanish Bank,IBAN ,I have had a problem with only "Orange" in Benidorm who wanted only a Spanish Bank account, went to Movistar and set up DD with N26,(German IBAN) no problem, same with Iberderola,Wise are the best as you get two accounts, one UK one EU,( Lithuania I think),there is also Revolut,if you open using a Spanish address you will get a Spanish IBAN ,this is available in December, present Revolut opened outside Spain ,using Spanish address will change to Spanish IBAN also in December.

Any card works in Spain, dealing with most major companies presents no problems, but there are still a few dinosaurs out there.

Don't get a Spanish bank account unless you want to live there...and even then...

I moved from a Spanish Sabadell account to WISE and had a terrible time trying to cancel the Spanish account - they kept charging me fees and overdrawl fees although I had asked then to close the account. All of the time I was told i had to go to Spain and cancel the account in the branch I opened it - a complete scam IMO. They also sent me a debt collection letter from an agency to my home address in the UK all in Spanish.

Not at all surprised .. had many an up-and-downer in the branch... thought they would call security....they were so customer unfriendly.   No trouble closing account... think they were glad to be rid-of-me.    Wise  - very good never lookeback.

Thanks for your reply.

In our particular circumstances, our Sabadell account was opened in Los Alcazares (Murcia) and was opened with the help of our solicitor (with me in person at the branch). This was maybe 7 years ago when we were first looking at buying.

For the next 3 or 4 years, things were fine and no quarterly or annual fee was charged. I can't remember what the fees were but we started getting hit for them in c2020/21 - during lockdown - and when it was illegal to cross regional borders. Sabadell would only let me close the account if I went to the branch where it had been opened!!! In the end, I manually moved my DDs across to N26 and paid my solicitor (who still had PoA and was based in Los Alcazares) to go into the branch and close it and transfer the residual balance to the N26 account.

It cost me 150 Euros I think but saved me the hassle and suffering any fall-out akin to what you appear to have been subject to. Thankfully, the home insurance has never been with Sabadell so cancelling that with appropriate notice was never an issue which it has been for some.

Seems like I have been inundated with stories about ''crap'' Spanish Banks.  I am not surprised... they have a lot to learn about civilised customer Services..... dont they realise... its us (not me any more) that pay their wages.  Stay Cool

Why would you change your lawyer over such a small thing. The lawyer can't insist, he can suggest.

I personally have a Spanish bank account, as do other people on this forum, it's a matter of choice.

I like to be able to talk to someone personally, hardly ever do but like the fact that I can.

Cheers, J

I used to have a Spanish  bank fed up being charged 120 euros for the privlage  so I closed my account  down and use wise bank typical Spanish bank charged me 70 euros for closing my account also use nationwide flexplus account remember had to be the plus account then no charge for using a Spanish ATM

Yes Sabadell and home insurance is another story - even afrter I told them I wanted to leave the bank they still tried to tie me into another year of home insurance and had to insist that i did not want the automatic renewal - I really like mostthings in Spain but their banks is not one of them.
