I would have thought that somebody passing on an unpleasant experience would be appreciated by all members on the forum as a way of a friendly helpful warning to benefit other forum members,it's a shame that there are certain posts that seem to mock the helpful posts, a little appreciation for these fore warnings should be extended as one day it could be you that is the victim and I think you would be very upset if all you read was mocking remarks.

I agree Tomb.  I ve been advised not to employ British builders because of this which is an awful shame for the decent British  ones trying to make a living .  I have also found some of the British trades people to be rude and aggressive when you say something isn't working that th...

...ey've just supplied (or ripped you off for ).   They wouldn't act like that in UK so why act like it in Spain .    I threatened to take them to small claims and only then did they rectify fault which they wanted to charge me another 40 euros for .

Agree totally, many Brits are rip off merchants and when pulled become aggressive.

Agree Ray .  I only got a response from mine as he thought his 'business ' would become known to the tax authorities I guess if I took him to small claims .  It is why they don't want you to transfer money to their bank accounts as it is evidence and want cash only .   I know of a ...

...genuine Briish handyman who does declares his taxes and business but is finding it difficult to compete with all those that don't as they can under cut him .  Proves the point that cheapest isn't always best !!

Forget reclaiming in a Court unless you have an estimate detailing what the person is going to do and at what cist. The information must be on a proper bill giving business address, can be home address if that is where the business operates from, it must also contain business registration information and Vat number, if applicable, or fiscal reference. Without this the whole transaction is illegal and you as well as the other can be prosecuted.

It's very much a generalisation to group ALL British tradesmen as cowboys. I suggest you go off personal recommendations to avoid future disappointment.

I've been taken in by seemingly decent Brits I've met in bars, they can be very convincing and talk the talk really well, what we have to keep in mind is some of these are desperate people and live day to day on their wits. My problem was my poor grasp of Spanish so it was just easier to get Brits to do the work, my Spanish is improving and I'm now confident enough to use local tradespeople and I've been pleased with the results. We shouldn't be too judgemental as there are obviously some decent Brits plying their trades in Spain but seek references and get them to show you their previous work.

Why Oh Why do Brits rip off us Brit newbies?!! I’ve come into contact with three so called tradespeople since buying a property in June 2018 In San Miguel and each and everyone as had me over! Can a page be started to name and shame these people with of course a good explanation as to why they ...

...should appear on the disgrace page

I have an idea why not set up something on this site like a register of trusted traders that you can recommend. That way people can be sure that you are getting a good trader and help everyone and the good traders out there that don't rip you off
