Its a strange law. How are they going to know if a dog has walked 10km? I walk dogs as part of my job and some of them struggle with 1km due to various aliments, that's more a potential risk for dog especially in the summer months. But saying that it is Spain so it will be another law that the po...

That's good news. The dog owners who push their dogs around in pushchairs are not really helping their dogs. Perhaps with the GPS the authorities can track which dogs are pooping on the pavements too !!

Steve

Hi Steve, I was in Formentera Del Segura last week. First time for some 3 years. Sitting in the Town Square having a coffee, I noticed on at least 4 occasions local Spanish residents scooping up their dogs' number twos.

I mentioned this to my neighbour, (resident). He mentioned that recently the Town Hall had passed a local by-law which requires ALL dogs to have a DNA sample taken. This, in theory, encourages dog owners to be more responsible, otherwise a hefty fine could be applied. Certainly appears to be working.

I had no reason to doubt his explanation. This is not an April Fool's Day comment. No need for GPS either.

Regards,

Donald.

Hi Alba102,

No, that definitely isn't an April Fool's joke.  I live in Formentera del Segura and this law was introduced last year.  At a national level, the law was introduced in 2013, but was left to the Town Halls to roll out in each municipality.  I thought it was crazy that it had taken 9 years for Formentera to do it, until I found that Rojales, Benijofar and Daya Vieja haven't done so.  I was walking through the country lanes of Daya Vieja one day, when a chap fell into step alongside me with his dog.  When mine pooped and I picked it up, he thought I was joking when I told him that my dog's DNA was registered at our local vets and included on his microchip.  When we were initially advised of the requirement, I thought that people who don't care about the mess would simply not bother to register their dogs, but we were also given a tag which we had to attach to our dog's collar, so that the police can see at a glance those who haven't complied.

Kind regards,

Kim

In Spain it is not!!    The equivalent day in Spain is the 28th December.

I didn’t meanApril fool for that, but I think the 10km walk bit is a definite windup. If that’s the case I’ll be in prison soon!

Yes, I agree about the 10km walk.  I walk my dog at least 5km every morning, but even adding the 3 or 4 walks around our urb during the rest of the day, he gets 8-9km max. each day.  Some of the elderly dogs I see each day wouldn't be able to walk 10km, let alone their owners.  Good April Fool though, LOL!
