Hi Aitch,
We've had this discussion before.
I assume you're looking at Worldometer's "Deaths per 1m of population", where Spain's rate is slightly higher at 580 than the UK's at 575?
However, I believe a more relevant figure is one not listed, but derived from those that are, i.e. the number of deaths in each country expressed as a percentage of the number of infections. Using yesterday's Worldometer stats:
UK infections: 276,332 / Deaths: 39,045 = 14.13%
Spain infections: 286,718 / Deaths: 27,127 = 9.46%
So, although the UK currently has around 10,000 fewer infections than Spain, 4.67% more have died in the UK. Why? I think this is where the real value comes from these numbers. For me, the comparison begs the question, "Of the people who have become infected in Spain and the UK, why are a greater percentage dying in the UK?" Are there differences in interventions between each country? If so, what are the differences?
Taking any one single column from Worldometer's data set is limited in value; the real value comes from interrogating multiple data sets and asking the questions that those comparisons prompt. This thread has focused on comparisons between Spain and the UK, but of course the WHO is making similar comparisons between regions, continents and across the world.
Coincidentally, the UK's ONS has just released latest figures. Depressingly, they show that the UK is currently running at 61,895 excess deaths for this time of year, compared to the last 5-year average, of which over 48,000 are officially recorded as Covid-19 deaths - 10,000 more than recorded on Worldometer.....?
Kind regards,
Kim

And people wonder why other countries don't want Brit holiday makers on their soil.
Given past posts about the Madrileño feeling the Spanish epicentre for their 2nd homes on the Costas together with regular posts on here about the packed bars in P,aya Flamenca, perhaps a few extra visitors from the UK will go unnoticed?

That's why the Spanish police turned back the Madrileños at Easter, when they tried to travel to their coastal homes, but with the easing of lockdown and the possibility of the State of Alarm being lifted later this month, the Police will no longer be able to enforce that.
That said, the Spanish government has given us early warning that if there is a significant rise in the reproductive rate, they will reintroduce lockdown measures. For example, when the R0 number in the Valencian autonomous region increased from 0.63 to 0.8, the regional government took the decision to delay by 1 week our region moving into phase 2. Hopefully, future increases will be dealt with just as swiftly and only in areas that become hotspots, so that other regions throughout the country may continue a degree of economic recovery.
Kind regards,
Kim

Hi Kim, yes same idea here i.e. targeted lockdowns. But we need to get our test/tract/trace system operational first! It went 'live' last Thursday but nothing from the government on how many have been reported. But then the government testing figures have been repeatedly shown to be inccurate so not really a surprise I guess.
Stay safe.
