You said..... .... "and that the UK government is not being unreasonable to try and keep as much money in the UK as they can"

In my opinion that's protectionist and abusive towards personal choice and freedom.

And actually anti EU at the same time.

There is no need to lock their own citizens up in their own country.

Maybe as anti-EU as Spain ignoring the EU guidance on requiring a test before travel? Or as anti-UK as Germauy banning all UK visitors? If the UK policy only applied to EU countries you might have a point about it being anti-EU but it applies worldwide.

There are many UK visitors here at the moment, so locked up is not really an accurate description, though it is better than another poster who compared the UK to North Korea.

Easyjet has repositioned its British fleet to bring Germans down to the Costa Blanca according to Simon Calder in the Independent.

As mainland Europeans flood into Spain for their holidays, British home owners and holidaymakers that want to come to Spain are being told no.

Is the true agenda that the British government really just wants you to spend your cash in the UK?

Steve

I don't think so - as an island we have done so much worse than other islands in terms of Covid and that is mostly down to travel (in each of the waves) so you can understand that after Boris getting it so wrong with India he wants to  be extra careful now.

Big difference from 16 months ago is that now a massive proportion of the UK population have been vaccinated, many fully vaccinated. Vaccines now being offered to 18 years and above as of a few days ago.

You may feel safer in Spain but the reality is average UK deaths are currently 10 per day, none of the major EU countries including Spain come close to that figure. You say you are tested before you fly to Spain? there are no testing or proof of vaccinations required when flying to Sp...

...ain from the UK, all you need is the completed Spanish Health form. Spanish policy on face masks is under review and likely to be the similar to the UK's next week. Latest news today is that the delta variant will be the dominant strain the Spain within a month - https://english.elpais.com/society/2021-06-21/experts-calculate-that-coronavirus-delta-strain-will-be-predominant-in-spain-in-a-month.htm

I hope Spain do start asking for tests and proof of vaccination.

Amber coding allows people to travel to Spain who really need to travel, second home owners like myself being one of them. The main UK tourist season starts end of July, by which time the restrictions could be totally different, that depends upon the vaccine rollout in Spain as much as infection rates. The vast majority of the UK adult population will be fully vaccinated come end of July.

Why is the UK is trying to get money back from it's citizens such a crime in your eyes? Isn't everyone trying to get the same money? Did Spain open the doors to the UK because they wanted to see us after so long or because they wanted the money?

Aitch.

Not a crime but I want a choice. It should be by persuasion and not under-handed enforcement.

Reasons why I compared to North Korea;

1. Freedom of movement - 6 months ago I could freely move throughout all the countries of the EU without any restrictions. Now due to a combo of Brexit and COVID my choices are limited. Sorry but really not interested in the Falklands or St. Helena for college , the sun or a second home, all the equivalent of a Siberian gulag in my book.

2. I can visit state sponsored hospitality / leisure outlets (lockdown funding) such as Butlins etc. I understand the Union Jack is obligatory and flying high over many of the camps, let’s face it Hi-De- hi may have its appeal to some but it’s organised red coat events and PA address announcements smacks of work camp / Maoist posters hailing agriculture and fresh air for meagre rations.

3. I work hard for what I earn so how I choose to spend it, where I spend it and on what should be my prerogative and I should not be influenced, pressured or directed by any government. Eat out to Help out , is similar to the Communist style - Balkantourist tokens of the seventies! All TV channels are awash with programmes advocating wide open spaces, sheep farming, fossil hunting and picnics in the Dales. Talk about brainwashing!

4. Breaking agreements - Boris has become another over-privileged, shabbily dressed and over weight despot - glady telling his citizens what they should and shouldn’t do, but doing the opposite himself, nose in trough, breaking all the rules in the book. He should move Chequers to Pyongyang - he might even get a trade agreement! They have so much in common.

5. Food banks - the English equivalent of bread queues and post - Stalinist shortages. Meanwhile the elite snack away at The Ivy.

6. Over zealous risk management-

Got all my vaccs.

I’ve had blood tests to show I have antibodies.

I’ve paid for countless tests to prove I don’t have Covid

I’ve completed more locator forms than a high risk prisoner on parole.

I answer more Government tracer phone call check ups than a MI5 monitored terrorist.

Sit in quarantine longer than a drug offender caught with a bag of spice in his cell.

But no - I can’t be trusted , I can’t spend my money where I want.

remember the outcry in this country when they tried to force every employee to have their wages paid into a bank account?

It’s still against the law and you’re still entitled to be paid in the coin of the realm. It’s to prevent unscrupulous employers paying their workers in tokens that can only be spent in the factory mill shop.

But no— we’re not there yet, but we’re heading there - totalitarianism by stealth!

You can indeed travel to all parts of England, that’s my whole point! You can travel to Manchester via Bolton for example , mixing on rail platforms without a mask in sight. You don’t need to quarantine in Blackpool. Manchester or Bolton. You don’t need tests to give you permission to trave...

...l. You don’t need to spend upwards of £800 (based on family of 4) to meet the requirements to travel. You don’t have your temperature taken and when you return home having mixed with (who knows , carrying who knows what) you can mix again with your neighbours , family , friends and colleagues without a care in the world. In fact you’re actively encouraged by the government to behave in this way. Staycations are applauded - crowding our small beaches and tourists spots even more thus increasing potential super/spreaders. Lessons not learned from 16 months ago!

Whereas I , am tested before I travel to Spain, if I fly everyone else on that plane has been tested and jumped through hoops to be on the flight Risks are negligible . I’m temperature tested on landing, I complete location forms, I take tests to return, quarantine for 10 days having had no air contact with strangers (everyone wears a mask in public in Spain). take further two tests and live under virtual house arrest with government agents checking I remain so.

How, just how can this government strategy that allowed the delta covid horse to bolt before trying to lockdown to late and seem tough , just how is this intelligent and coherent?

It makes no sense in terms of public safety otherwise as they did in Spain they would have had internal borders and local / regional closures. it is just a cynical method of this government trying to recoup revenue from the holiday taxpayer.

It is a prison - you’re locked in , physically and financially, emotionally  with a whimsical traffic light system that is meaningless nonsense. Green or red would have been sufficient. Go or stay put.

Personally I feel safer in the streets of Benissa or Benidorm than in Blackpool or Bolton. If I didn’t have to come back to UK I wouldn’t but another word beginning with B put pay to that, I’ve now got less freedom than I did 6 months ago thanks to that.

This government has spent millions but nothing compared to the US or what the EU are funding to individual member states to come through this crisis.

Looking at the lack of logic you have just outlined, do you think it is lack of competence or it not being about Covid at all anymore, just about money and power?

We will. That is why we need to vaccinate the world to suppress disease levels and reduce its opportunities / probability of mutation.

Vaccination will always be cat and mouse. True breakthroughs will be broad spectrum treatments for viruses that aren't too fussed about variants.

The over-reaction to less dangerous viruses was caused by a Covid vaccine.

Indeed - that’s another, that includes lack of opposition resulting in a one party state.

Fair comment, but I try to strike a balance when I see the UK Gov getting slated, nothing about the things they get right. nothing about the bad decisions of other countries. Still the good news is that we can argue to and fro, a lot of people and countries do not have that privilege.
