I would advise anyone with an Irish parent or grandparent to get an Irish passport, I know people who have done this and the really annoying part is they without exception voted for brexit.

Once we have our TIEs I wonder how this will affect us travelling in the rest of Europe, I like to visit Germany several times a year and I have family in Denmark, I know our TIEs mean we can stay here but will they mean anything to the rest of Europe?

This is a good point. I am resident in Spain but UK passport. If I wanted to drive elsewhere in Europe, would my residencia or passport be used for travel within the EU. If my passport is stamped, technically I can remain for 90 days, but I live in Spain.

Oh what a tangled web

Hello Paul

Yes as a UK passport holder if you travel to anywhere in the Schengen zone you too will be subject to the 90 day rule ... ... TIEs only apply in Spain.

Cheers

So. I could spend 3 months travelling around Europe, then return to Spain for 3 months.

Obviously come to think of it,  time in Spain wouldn't count or we couldn't go anywhere at all.

This post that was quoted has been deleted.

That's what I was thinking. If I was driving between EU countries in a Spanish car. Would I get stopped? If so would I need to produce my Passport as a British Citizen, or my residencia as a Spanish resident. I am working on the principle that the 90 days is in Europe not a European country. IE 1 week in France and 1 week in Germany (as an example) is 2 weeks in the EU. I was considering driving to Italy when the world comes back to some sort of normality, so would involve, leave Spain, travel through France into Italy. Maybe even on to Greece at some stage, so more EU countries.

I think the phrase that springs to mind is " be careful what you wish for".

This whole Brexit has been a disaster. Not only for us wanting to move Spain but for the UK

The costs and contraints are certainly makeing me have secnd thought but probably worse if I retire in UK given the state of the BREXI fiasco

Surely if you are a resident of Spain or any EU country the 90days does not apply, but if you are not an EU resident you cannot have 90 days in another EU country if you just spent 90 days in another.

Hello,

It doesn't matter that you are resident in Spain, you are still British with a UK passport.....so the same rules apply

Cheers

Is it not about the difference between residency and citizenship? If you had obtained citizenship of Spain you would have freedom of movement in Schengen as an EU citizen, but that is not conferred by residency alone, which only entitles you to stay in Spain for more than 90 days. Step outside and you become a 3rd national with your UK passport - although it seems unlikely you will get checked if you just move around Schengen.
