I have read on another forum the Portugal are doing away with 90/180 days that has been in place since Brexit, has anyone heard this or is just wishful thinking I know that countries can do this without permission from the European Union.

I agree. If that were true it would be all over the news and expat sites.

Never going to happen,Portugal are good Europeans and certainly know which side their bread is buttered.Just spent three weeks travelling around Portugal and if the Tories in the UK are serious about levelling up they should come and study Portugal. Many places I visited have ongoing projects largely funded by the EU to continue with their development. Its good to see and Portugal most certainly wouldn’t rock the Schengen boat for a very small number of third country nationals.

I would not believe anything unless there is a link to an official source.

Hi Elaine,

Whilst EU member countries can opt out of the Schengen travel zone (e.g. the Republic of Ireland), Portugal joined Schengen in 1991 and a simple Google search, "Is Portugal planning to opt out of Schengen travel zone?" returned no relevant information.  As Steve has said, if there was any truth to this, it would have been widely trailed in the media.  Unless you're able to advise on which "other forum" you read this, preferably including a hyper link so that we can read the information for ourselves first-hand, I'm afraid my assumption is that this is wishful thinking.

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi Elaine,

Was it CBF's sister forum, TalkQuesada, where you read about Portugal lifting the Schengen 90/180 rule?  It would seem that someone has regurgitated EuroNews' article from earlier this year and managed to misunderstand it too.  It didn't state that Portugal was opting out of Schengen, simply that it was going to allow UK tourists to use the e-gates at the busiest Portuguese airports, normally reserved for EU citizens, so as to avoid large queues at arrivals.

https://www.euronews.com/travel/amp/2022/04/25/portugal-becomes-first-country-to-ignore-brexit-and-fast-track-uk-tourists

"Clutching at straws" springs to mind....!

Kind regards,

Kim

And what does the UK do with the money they’ve saved? Not spending it on improving the NHS like they promised, not spending it on sewage treatment, not spending it on taking back control of borders, etc, etc, etc.Rapidly becoming the sick man of Europe doesn’t require any investment.
