Here’s one for some of the folks, if you had SOLAR,for everything and had say bottle gas for cooking, how much would you save from being all electric, would it be a good investment.? and only using your electricity as an emergency back up, woodstove in winter, but I suppose you’d still be hammered for electric standing charge eh! , maybe some things are maybe just best left alone folks. 😉😉😉

The answer to the standing charge is, batteries and a generator for the time when your batteries cannot cope with your demand.

Be interesting to know pay back of such a system

You can't please everyone Jim, so why worry.  I see this on other forums, it's almost as though people think you are an employee of the forum, maybe Jan can put up a link for customer services, some place to complain.  (Then I can complain about my old mate Geoff L over on La Marina).

Cheers for now, keep up the good work Jim...

Syd

The problem as I see it Jim is that at times you come over as condescending and probably bullish, but in general quite sensible .but people who live in Spain have to accept that it's not the uk.

Theres nothing for you to understand. If you don't agree. Up to you but your opinion isn't the same as ours. If we want to complain about anything it's up to us. I and others personally think it's very expensive. I've notice you comment on everything and take sides with Spain because you've ...

...probably been here a long time. Since I've come here I've met so many smug expats who love to put us newbys in our place because you all know so much more. Well this Newby is not interested.

I believe standing chargers are the highest in the EU.  Yes, it is expensive but is a short winter and with cheap time tariffs, you can work around it.

My neighbour has gone off the grid he says it's a 10-year payback but as bills raise that payback time will change. he easily runs everything of the solar including an electric car. As a long term investment, I'm sure he is on a winner.

If you review Iberdrolas bills you will see much of the costs are made up from the usual 'additional charges' maintenance of electricity to doorstep, a few things. We once went through a friends bill to find out on that bill anyway the charges were about 50% of the bill or that actually cons...

...umed.

Ibredrola is in bed with the goverment and I don't think you have to look too far to find a government minister or two high up/on the board of Iberdrola ;-)

Our bills are quite high, so know only too well of trying to get them down. We switched to the 'day and night' tariff. I haven't got the info to hand, but to summarise - it's about half the cost from 10pm-12pm next day. So use all your heavy duty stuff, washing machine etc and night - it has helped a little if you manage these things.

As others have said, they will default to putting you on the tariff to suit them & if you have a smart meter put it, they seem to reset it again to what suits them, we had to go in and change a tariff back to something similar we had before -- for a further  €150 admin charge because they changed the meter. Not happy.

I've been advised by a few people that a good first step to reduce bills is to get solar hot water, as certainly for permanent residents, this is one of the highest consumption elements in the house.

Will all of that,  i'd still stay in Spain - annoying, but so many other things are cheaper.

How much is solar hot water to install?

Hi

Have just read through this one and all the replies. We only can get out to our place relatively infrequently at the moment, so although the cost of electric is not that much of an issue now, we do intend to be out for longer periods as soon as possible. So I for one would be keen to see how you ...

...get on, is it as easy to switch in Spain as the UK? and what other suppliers are there? Doesn't matter where you are, you do not want to pay more than you have to. Can it be done on the web as in the UK?

Anyway please keep us posted, it may help others like us.

Thanks

hi i been here for few year our electric works out about 0.22 cents a hour that includes taxes and fees, standard tariff with  iberdrola dont think its bad.

I’m thinking of putting in a wood stove in a duplex home,I had a rather large Canadian one in another holiday home I owned in Ireland some time back. It was very large and had a back boiler which could power upto 13 radiators . My house which was large sat in its own plot of land so I had no close neighbors to think about smoke etc when it was installed. They took the pipe up 3 feet from the stove then, put in a bend where it then went through the wall and up the outside of the house. This time I want to put a really small stove in my home for the wife for the winter months, does the pipe go straight through the ceiling or does it go out through the wall and up to my roof terrace upstairs?,in general would I need to have the community administrator involved. Now my friend who lives 4 doors down has a bungalow joined on and he’s a stove. So they must be allowed. I’m only asking in general,so any views,or help, would be fantastic. Thanks awfully........James.
