Whilst on the subject of electricity, has anyone thought about or looked into Solar?  In the UK 3kw is typically circa £5k.

Hi Syd we have both mentioned solar power, I have been reading about solar power v Spanish Gov now I thought it is a good idea but after reading this on the following site maybe not as it seems you have pay a tax even  have Solar Power the Spanish Gov a tax nicknamed The Sun Tax

Jim was only trying to give some advice, but if you only want to hear the answers that agree with you why ask for advice in the first place?

Your going to make a lot of friends with that attitude, but maybe your not interested in making friends!

Screen shot and post the advice Jim gave me.

It may take a while as he gave none.

You really do have a terrible attitude, good luck in making friends over here if you keep that going. I for one won't be commenting again on any of your posts!

For goodness sake Cathiejstead let the electricity matter come to a close we are getting a little bored. People have tried to help and give advice, but it appears the help and advice you were looking for may have been not expected as expected and because of this you decided to try to belittle people because they have lived there longer, and being childish by calling them smug.. I do not share your opinion possibly many others may agree with me, perhaps that is because whatever information I had asked for I always thank them in a polite manner. I have found the people who have lived there for longer have picked up a lot of information and tip's which they share free of charge.. In a way I can under stand your frustrations and annoyance over the cost of Electricity, Water or Gas utilities, but surely these charges should not have surprised you, as I would have thought you or your solicitor as a matter of course would have checked these out prior to purchasing the property as you would have done if you purchased a home in the UK..

Peter, it’s the highlight of my Sunday morning...I make myself toast and coffee, prop my pillows on my bed and read the interesting and useful posts on this site.

One day...I will be an ex pat living full time in Spain...fingers crossed. In the meantime, holidays will have to suffice.

Keep up the good work all you guys. I, for one, appreciate it.

Jackie

Hi we bought a place in October Guardamar. Went home Dec 18 till Feb 23 this year and turned everything off at mains and we were charged €50 a month still,is this right? I'm not complaining as so many other things are cheaper and my health is better, but just want to know the fee every month if you don't use as going back to UK 3 months again

Thanks for your help

Pauline

If you review Iberdrolas bills you will see much of the costs are made up from the usual 'additional charges' maintenance of electricity to doorstep, a few things. We once went through a friends bill to find out on that bill anyway the charges were about 50% of the bill or that actually consumed.

Ibredrola is in bed with the goverment and I don't think you have to look too far to find a government minister or two high up/on the board of Iberdrola ;-)

Our bills are quite high, so know only too well of trying to get them down. We switched to the 'day and night' tariff. I haven't got the info to hand, but to summarise - it's about half the cost from 10pm-12pm next day. So use all your heavy duty stuff, washing machine etc and night - it has helped a little if you manage these things.

As others have said, they will default to putting you on the tariff to suit them & if you have a smart meter put it, they seem to reset it again to what suits them, we had to go in and change a tariff back to something similar we had before -- for a further  €150 admin charge because they changed the meter. Not happy.

I've been advised by a few people that a good first step to reduce bills is to get solar hot water, as certainly for permanent residents, this is one of the highest consumption elements in the house.

Will all of that,  i'd still stay in Spain - annoying, but so many other things are cheaper.
