I have numerous heart meds to take each day. I buy these over the counter. As a precaution, bring a copy of your prescription. Most are very cheap. The most expensive is blood thinners, around €80 a pack.

Your doctor should be able to prescribe 3 months at a time to save you money. Unless you’re over 60 and on free nhs prescriptions, it likely cheaper in Spain tbh. ...

Hello

Just for your info. Bubblesyear,  my blood thinning meds are €3.45  a box...Sintrom 4mg    ( that was last year, last time I checked)

Cheers

You are right.  I was on Warfarin then  Xarelto and now Pradaxa which is 90 euro.  I am 74 and get them on my medical  card  here in Ireland but not on my European medical card ( the blue one ).  I must chat with my GP and pharmacist here and try to get 6 months.  The other meds are ok. Just the blood thinner is expensive.

Thanks to all who helped me

Hi,

We had an extended an stay last year and ran out of meds and could get venlafaxine and other prescription meds quite easily, if a little expensive.

What we could not get however without seeing a doctor was Anit-biotics.

Hope that helps.

Thank you. It's crazy you can get antibiotics.

Hello. We were at our apartment last October in Los Altos ,Torrevieja. We could not board the plane for our flight home because of a discrepancy with our documentation so we had to stay for another 4 days. I enquired at the Pharmacy at the Via Park at Los Altos about buying my heart medication eg Atorvastatin ,Clopidogrel , Bisoprolol and other medication for Irritable bowel etc. I was assured that I could purchase the medication at the pharmacy. But before leaving the UK I think you should get a copy of your prescription from your surgery at home as proof. Best of luck.

If I understand this right? If I take my UK prescription (Last issue) to a pharmacy I am likely to get some of the medication over the counter without a Spanish Dr Repeat Prescription.?

Yes, you can. You don’t need to surrender the prescription, just show it. It’s safer that you get the correct dosage. There are certain drugs which they can only dispense providing with a prescription less than 12 months old. Prostrate medication is one such drug as an example.

Re meds.

1. If you run out go to clinica, show your E111 card or whatever the up to date version is.

2. Ask for a script. You'll probably be told to wait to see duty doctor.

3. Your script from England is useful but not vital.

4. You should be given a script and take it to farmacia with your entitlement (card/form) this should get you your meds without a problem.

5. Depending on age you will pay for example 10% of the value or less.  In December my husband needed Apixaban(90+euros) but because he is 75 only paid less than 5 euros.

6. If you ever do buy at full price and it is substantial keep your receipt as you can reclaim it once back in England.

7. I got my BP meds over the counter by showing my uk script and as they were only 4euros 24 cents I didn't even bother to spend my time and their stretched resources going to clinica even though at my age of 68 I would have only paid 10%.

Hope this helps
