Hi All

Just received this message so try again in a few days if they decide to publish it.

-----------------------------------------------------

We’re checking this petition

5 people have already supported Keith petition.

We need to check it meets the petition standards before we publish it.

Please try again in a few days

I get the feeling that they will reject it but if they do , I'll try and find another way.

I may have to word it differently like:

Warn British Spanish Property Owners About Current Laws That Favour Squatters

I think you're right, Keith, they could reject it on both these grounds:

"Petitions must call for a specific action from the UK Government or the House of Commons.

"Petitions must be about something that the Government or the House of Commons is responsible for."

Perhaps something like, "UK government to petition the Spanish government on behalf of UK citizens who are property owners in Spain, both resident and non-resident....." and "UK government to make prospective UK property owners aware of the extreme risk of buying property in Spain.....", etc.

The UK government does do this kind of thing, either directly or via the British Embassy, so this is definitely worth trying.  I'm very happy to support the petition - if it's approved, I plan to share it with Anne Hernandez, who runs Brexpats in Spain, an organisation that has attained a much higher profile since Anne was named in the Queen's Honours List.  She has a very active Facebook page and I would hope we can pick up thousands of 'signatures' there.  This forum has 42,000+ members and I'd like to think that, apart from the odd naysayer, most will understand the importance of this issue to all of us.  If it reaches the threshold that requires a Government response (100,000 signatures, I believe), I think we should also send it to all Partido Popular MPs in Spain, as they're the most powerful opposition to the current PSOE alliance.

Good luck Keith, I look forward to further updates 🤞

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi Kimmy

I should have read your message first before raising the 2nd petition as yours read better than mine .  The problem with these petitions is the limited number of characters they allow in each box to describe the seriousness/severity of the situation (very frustrating process).

Hopefully , my new petition is enough for them to accept otherwise we can try again.

Regards

Keith

Squatters - What Now Folks ? ? ? - Rejected petition Warn British Spanish Property Owners Of Favourable Squatter Laws

Advise them that the current laws in Spain provide squatters a legal way to take ownership of your property and belongings. If your property is unoccupied (even for a short time),they can break in, change the locks, and also call the Police to claim 'adverse possession' of your property....

Signed. I just hope that the U.K. government takes some action. The situation here is becoming very worrying. Thank you for raising this issue and I am more than happy to support your efforts.
