There is a company called Staysure, whom I believe are a subsidiary of Axa the enormous French outfit. They appear to be reasonable and easy enough to sort out online, we used them a couple of years ago, both over 70.

Thanks Stehanie

I got a quote from them at first for annual at a very reasonable £497 which was for 15mnths as they have an offer on but after 70 they only allow max of 35 days visit and so did a single visit of 90 days and quote was £1650. I, m struggling as I can't get a quote under £1000 for 90 days single visit as now told no one will offer 90 days on an annual policy over 70. Expected jump with Covid but not this high. Spending 3rd full day on Internet and phone. At this rate think we,ll be moving our ferry booking to next year and trying again. I, m now trawling through the new govt directory of insurers for difficult cases.

Help please 🙏. We are booked to come over on 26th August for full 90 days so today have tried to organise our travel insurance. OMG! 😯    I knew car hire was over the top and expected same with travel insurance but prior to last year our insurance was £170 for an annual policy an...

...d today I can't get it lower than £1470, but maximum visit of only 60days and to get a single 90 day policy lowest price out of 6companies was £1843. I,ve spent 8hrs trawling the sites and can't believe the prices. We are over 70, have medical conditions so expect high prices but not this high.

Can anyone point me to a company with reasonable prices they,ve found for a long stay period for over 70,s with medical conditions. The prices are enough to give one a heart attack.

Hi Anne

yes Saga was first one tried, on their annual cover the max duration was 35days for over 70,s and their single trip for 90days was £1860 even phoned them but with our medical conditions that was best price. I,ve spent 3 days on internet/phone. Tonight got best price of £547 from a  company but only covered for public hospital use with ghic not private hospital. At least its coming down. Apparrantly because I,ve rolled over into 71-79 age bracket that has caused a huge increase and no annual policy like we used to have will allow over 45days duration. Staysure only 35 days on their annual, they were £889. Over 80 (Allans 2 yrs off as he's 78 in September, max duration is only 31 days. The future is definitely not rosy. The past hasn't been that rosy either, a total  ransacking, thieving insurance company refusing our claim, €14k fine due to corrupt translator, and a cowboy builder robbed us of €3k with atrocious work that had to be redone. Not impressed. Worst thing we ever did.

Would it be cost effective to nip home for a couple of days every 30 days or so? This could also help to keep the cost of your UK house insurance down.

You can get some reasonably priced flights form/to the UK from Alicante and if you have an airport parking arrangement then airport tranfers needn't cost too much.

...

We are 70 kms from Alicante and would need to park our Spanish car in a carpark close by as taxis would be horrendous each time. That would add approx €250 but better than cost of hiring each time. Also a taxi to our UK home would be £40 x2, add any tests still required each time and flights from Newcastle not that cheap. Think it would work out more costly than the new lower price of £547 that I have managed to get. I, m still trying to beat that price cos I,m facing similar cost for each of visits next year. The agent for Staysure suggested same so we could use their annual policy for £497. Its so ridiculous that an annual policy can be 30% of the cost of a single visit. I,m amazed I haven't seen another poster in this situation, a pensioner with a long stay duration who possibly has some medical conditions, or are they not declaring them or ignoring the duration or even going without. I, m not beat yet! The Gov, t website has 4 pages of specialist insurers and I,ve only gone through 2 so guess I, ve got some more work to do.

Thanks Anne

It is a nightmare, didn't realise going from 7 to 71 was such a big jump in travel insurance. Put this post on FB and got tons of replies but most people travel relying on their ehic/ghic only. Some people discovered same thing and are now not travelling at all, it's ironic you work your life away for your old age then get crucified for getting older. Anyway I have now got a single trip of 90 days for £547 which is cheapest yet but that sort of price means over £1k on 2 yearly trips not what we expected. I am 🙏 the company we, ve used for past 10years will allow the extension to 90 days on their annual policy which is being considered by their underwriters and we have to wait but at least £547 is a dro from som prices. I did a quote last night with Insure for medical, and got £2370 and £2864. Ugh who the hell is going to pay that. Will update when I have found the best price, till then I, m still searching, now on day 5 since I started, full days at that.

Hope to meet up soon

Regards

Just a word on car hire. This rockets if you try and do more than 30 days. The solution is to hire for a month, then hire another car etc

Hi Graeme, we have a Spanish car over there at moment expired itv to sort out, but we are travelling by car anyway so have that too. Btw we did the hiring over 2 months for many yrs by doing 1 mnth, then return and exchange cars but as we,re 70kms away from Alicante, hated the bother so bought a cheap car. We should be travelling by van taking more stuff over(done 2 trips already) but now with customs and iva on belongings, we, re chickenening out this time. Hoping customs is easier next year instead.
