General note re Jim's Guides.

Jim has setup a new website on which to publish and maintain his guides in an effort to make them available to a wider audience. Alex has been asked about posting links to the site but I don't know what he's decided.

Jim's original guides are still available here, but Jim is nolonger updating them. Alex has confirmed to me that if/when these become out of date they will be discontinued. But who knows, maybe others will come forward who can keep them upto date; though I've no idea what the legal position on that might be.

Paul

Hi Paul,

I've noticed on a few threads you are making statements as if you know how this forum works more than me. Also, at no point have I said content posted by members could be taken over and edited by other members. I clearly replied to you that if members feel content has become out of date it can be discontinued and removed and, if relevant, users can be redirected and linked to content posted by other members elsewhere on this website. I would appreciate if you do not post any more false information and assumptions as this can cause confusion.

Alex, (only in his defence), the poster,(cookep1) is, as I am, sometimes  confused. I see the poster ( as recently joined), may not be accustomed as to how this forum works. I believe that help by members & admin are welcoming, & encouraging . Admin can assist ( when one has time) to answer any confusion. Hope helps. V

Hi Alex,

I apologise if you've misconstrued my response but I'm not aware I have posted any false information or assumptions, nor have I at any point implied or suggested I know how this forum works better than you.

Yes I've responded on a couple of threads regarding Jim's Guides, usually in response to queries about their availability. My posts have consistently stated the guides are still available but are not being updated. I believe this to be correct?

I did not suggest you had said content could be taken over by others, I stated maybe maintaining these could be undertaken by other, as I believe these guides are highly regarded by members and it would therefore be a benefit if they could be maintained. But I explicitly stated I had no idea if this was possible.  Again I believe this to be correct?

I also quoted what you had said to me regarding guides becoing out of date i.e. that when guides become out of date they will be discontinued. You confirm this is correct in your response.

I did say you had been asked (by another user) about posting links to Jim's new site, following the deletion of links included in posts by other users in a previous thread. But again stated I did not know what your decision on this was. Again, I believe this to be correct?

I appreciate this is an emotive subject which is why I have endeavored to keep my posts factual and neutral. If however I have misunderstood something then then please feel free to explain the error.

Paul

Hi John

I agree wholeheartedly with your comments. There are many knowledgable members who are prepared to support and guide others, ensuring the forum continues to thrive.

As you say, there are those that have, perhaps, felt a little overwhelmed previously. I certainly have noticed the absence of posts from some members, although they are still actively reading the threads

Alex’s position must, I’m sure, be very difficult on occasion. I’m sure today has been no exception. A successful forum must surely be the sum total of the many, not the few. 🤪🥂

I couldnt agree more.  I am at that transitional stage of getting close to retirement and moving from having holidays in Spain to living in Spain so I find this site useful and no question is too silly.  I really appreciate that people are knowleagable and happy to give up their time and share that hard earned information.  I have been impressed with the site and the management or regulation of it and find it a valuable tool.

I haven't been around for a little while, on and off the forum for various reasons.

I have found that most forum members fall into 2 categories. Those who are looking for help and those looking to help.

In the main, I have had a lot of help through this forum and, (I sincerely hope), I have done my part in 'putting back' by providing guidance for subjects I am qualified, competent or experienced in. I have also met some great people through the services I provide and many have become friends also.

I was really quite surprised when I found that some long-standing members were no longer around and I believe everyone agrees that Jim provided a fantastic series of guides that brought factual guidance to everyone. He will be sadly missed.

On the flip side, I did feel somewhat exasperated when I would see a post, someone looking for help, only to be met with some unhelpful response or pedantic reply. I myself have been on the receiving end of some 'unhelpful' posts and I just reside to the fact that some people must have very little else going on in their lives.

I must admit, I do wonder sometimes why people come to a forum and post for things that a good web search engine would provide the same answers immediately, but that said, often the poster is looking for additional support with personal experiences or recommendations from the other forum members.

Overall I believe the forum is a great source of help and I echo the 'let's keep things friendly' message or it may only be a matter of time before the forum admin decides enough is enough and it would be a great shame to lose the forum altogether.

Stay safe everyone and keep smiling :o)

Hope it helps!

Hi Kim,

Yes, you are right, I can breathe a sigh of relief now and we can all look forward. It is a shame about Jim’s guides though. Although I do not use them, I would have liked the link to be able to help others. I have received some PM’s asking me for it but am unable to help. Jim did a lot of re...

Hi,

I pop in and out of this & only seen Jim’s guides a week or so ago & thought how helpful they were. Are they all gone now,

Villas, why have you done that? You can wrap it up anyway you wish, but all that’s missing is a great big spoon. What is it today? Just helping out other members. What tosh! 🤪🥂

Hi Villas

I’m just sorry. Can I really be bothered with your feigned innocence? No, I can’t. Perhaps a chat with your mates about the next move in the game. Tedious and juvenile 🤪🥂
