There is no such thing as free banking with bricks and mortar banks, including UK. They may claim there are no charges, but I guarantee, as was stated earlier, that they will be obscured somehow, through lower interest rates etc.
FWIW we bank with CaixaBank, transfer in our pensions intermittently and seem to have no charges, other than fees for bank cards and any online transfers, none of which are enormous.

Bank charges are normal for all banks in Spain so you are not being ripped off.
If you are a resident make sure you have the correct residents account and afaik you need to have a minimum of 5000€ invested or in your account to be free of charges.
It never was 22 years ago when I first opened the account with the old bank that was taken over in the 2009 crash! They are now deducting over 55 euros a quarter just to pay the taxes and utility bill which I also get ripped off on. Minimum billing for water & elec even when your not using any!!I also have more than the amount you mentioned in my account
..,!

Standing charges, which is what I imagine you are referencing, are standard for all utility accounts everywhere. These are payable whether or not you are using the supplies and in principle cover the infrastructure of delivery to your property.

I wish ! Sabadell still charge us fees and we have a large amount in the account ! We even went in to ask about removing the fees. We are residents … have enough to buy a second property if we wanted … suggested we could easily find a better deal …but they just said no. !
They are all running a cartel that is against the public interest! More competition is needed from on line banks.Im sure in our day and age it will come in the meantime I'm going to try and open an account with wise. Thanks for your comment.

I bank with Barclays and I have a Nationwide account and I beg to differ. They have never charged me any bank charges.I have never gone overdrawn though. And as for interest payments they are on a like for like basis roughly the same.

No, they don’t, you are quite correct. But the charges will be raised somehow even if not immediately apparent. They will be a fraction of a percentage difference in interest rates, or, as you mention, overdraft charges etc etc. There is no business in the world which can afford not to charge its customers somehow and banks are businesses, not charitable institutions.

For everyone's information, we are non residents and changed to Cajamar Bank in March 2019 opened a "weferrent" account. It's online, app is perfect and haven't paid a cent in fees since opening. There is an English helpline should you need and you can go into the bank for help. If you do a transaction in branch there is a small charge(I,ve never needed to) a great bank.

Pauline
We had a similar problem of €220 per year charges with Sabadell. Held a meeting with them and we went onto their Key account and took out their house insurance which was the same price as I was paying. This reduced the the annual charges to €160. Still excessive. (We are Uk resident and have had our villa for 20 years).
