A lot of people use the brokerage company called DO YOU SPAIN.COM. It’s a simple page to navigate. You will see the prices starting from their smallest vehicles right up to the high end. Don’t be tempted to take their offer of insurance as the car hire firms will still insist that you take th...

If you choose not to pay for the extra insurance, please take photographs of the car before leaving and again when you return the car as most of these firms are charging people for damage which they never caused.....we have been caught on two occasions. The last time was with CLICK RENT who took €150 off our card after we had returned the car undamaged. The amazing thing was that we had paid for their CLICK RELAX INSURANCE and still they insisted that they had the right to charge us for some fictitious damage, we contacted the disputes team from the credit card company and got our money back.  All in all, if you take pictures before and after, you should be alright.

Good luck and enjoy your visit to Spain.

same thing happened to us although we took photos of the outside and plenty of them - we did not think to take photos of the inside. They tried to say we damaged the carpet but luckily another member of staff came to our rescue and confirmed that the damage had been done a long time and we were not responsible so please take pictures of everything

Hi,

Just to add to the story, we have probably hired from all the major car hirers at alicante over the last few years and if you do your homework you should be fine!

Most will charge or insist you take out the extra insurance but there are companies who will insure you for the year for around 100euros from the UK.

Also our neighbour has hired through Ryanair and has had three brand new cars on each occasion for approx 50 euros for 10 days!!! How do they do it?

As other people have said , even if you take out the added insurance always take two mins to take loads of photos....it could save a lot of heartache in the future!

As your on the La Marina Urb, why not get in touch with Lara cars, will meet you at the airport with vehicle, 5 minutes to check your paperwork and your away. The price they quote is the price you pay, no hidden extras and no credit card swipes. I would also add, that your met as soon as you come out of arrivals, so no long queues to worry about.

Had exactly the same problem with this company and would never book any hire car through them even though I took photo's they commented that "A photo is not evidence !!?                                         After six months argument I gave up.

Now use Daya Car Hire, a private highly recommend business run by Paul and Rachel.

oh no that company !!I do-it -spain I bought my own basic insurance on line, when I got to the desk it was late ,they told me my insurance was rubbish,i need all there singing and dancing insurance, yes it was quite expensive.they told me I wasn't covered for tyres, list was endless.

There was a black mark scuff on the boot but luckily,i took a photograph on my phone, told them at the desk.when I got back at the end, they went over it with a fine toothcomb, they tried to get me to pay for the scuff, after a massive argument,i walked out.

be very very careful I will never use them again,

i use coys what  a lovely friendly company

Coys, Lara Cars, these are the companies we need to be pushing on these forums, so that members can avoid the rip off merchants.

Yes, true but some people seem to be able to deal with those “RIP OFF MERCHANTS” better than others. Our neighbours ever pay the insurance and take the risk, it has paid off for them. Others friends, both over 70 refuse the insurance and again seem to come out the other end unscathed. It is a lottery. Off season, you technically can hire a hire VERY reasonably if not taking the excess insurance while both Coys and Lara do not offer the low prices and seem to be a bit more expensive.

We got caught on at least 3 or 4 occasions and fought our corner but became utterly disallusioned by what we were spending every year for car hire plus their insurance. We totalled up lady years spend which was higher than usual because we came with family in August...we spent £2,500 not euro...pounds.  In February this year, we bought a brand new Dacia Sandero Stepway from the Renault garage in Elche....on the road with sensors, blue tooth, cruise control, electric windows both back and front....€11.600. Best thing we have done in years. Come on , join the Sandero club!

All other makes for this standard of vehicle were quite a bit higher.

Car hire is a mine field.

I'm certainly going to look at Record for my next trip based on positive comments here, but in relation to the extended cover, have you looked at icarhireinsuance.com.

Grannyrose, I'm not surprised you hit a few wrong keys, looking at the size of that glass in front of you:-)
