I know how difficult it can be not speaking Spanish but usually in Doctors reception there is a notice saying to bring an interpreter if you can't speak Spanish. There not expensive and mine books appointments, if your meds are making you ill, she tells the doctor and a new prescription is sent to the Farmacia, also hospital appointments. If you live in Catral I can give you her contact details

...hem I needed an English speaking doctor they said the doctor you have just seen speaks English? What should I do should I complain or has anyone else had this problem.
Hi AP, sorry to hear the news. The doctor may have good medical reasons to change your medication (other patients might have had serious side effects and the doctor did not want you to also suffer from them; or the prescription medication was no longer available in Spain). During the change over your body may experience side effects problems. There are also many private doctors in Spain. In English (and with a Spanish Google translation) you can also send a letter to the Spanish Ministry of Health Care and ask them to help you. Address: Ministerio de Sanidad, Paseo del Prado 18 - 20, 28014 Madrid, Tlf. (91 596 10 00) . Ministerio de Sanidad - Services for citizens - Contacta con el Ministerio Two years ago I had a problem with my prescription medication; I wrote to them (English and Google Spanish (I stated this at the top of my Spanish letter (typed letter with three short paragraphs) asking them to help and for them to provide a solution. About 5 weeks later I got a reply in English and Spanish with a solution; their letter stated that if the local Spanish doctors had a problem they should contact the Spanish Ministry of Health to solve this matter. I showed the Spanish and English letters to my local government Spanish medical services and doctors and I got served. My local Spanish government healthcare centre was not happy that I had contacted the Spanish Ministry of Health; they are no longer problematic. It is also an international right for you to be entitled to your prescription medication.

Super helpful member
Although I can get by in Spanish on a day by day basis if I need to discuss something with my GP I take a translator with me. Would you wish something important or health threatening to be lost in translation? The doctor is possibly following guidelines issued by the health service or the practice where he/she works.

I totally agree and if I had been told that on the very first appointment I would have taken a translator but I was spoken to in English by the doctor with no problem but now the same doctor doesn’t speak English?

Hi , You can also go directly to the hospital A & E in Spain. They give you a medical check up and write/type out a medical prescription that you take to your local pharmacist.

I see nowhere hee any reference to the Spanish law. It says that the hospitals and centers de salud are obliged to provide themselves translators
