Any advice on how I can get a copy or duplicate NIE document?I bought a property in 2008 and got document then. I know my NIE number but don’t have the original document. The A4 piece of paper. We are non resident from UK. I now need the actual document to register a car as they will not accept just the number. Original doc was abstain through solicitor in Marbella our house is here in playa Flamenca. Thanks for any advice.

Strange that they will not just accept the number. I've bought 3 cars plus other things that require an NIE and they have always accepted my number only.

Quite a long procedure, I'm afraid. Firstly, go to where you got your NIE and ask if they can give you a copy.

If not, you have to file a report to the police saying the document is lost, stolen or whatever, Then you go through the same procedure as originally by filling in the EX-15 and then go to a National Police station or foreigners' office by making an appointment first.

Hopefully you can go to the place that first issued it.

A way around this is: If you have eg: utility bill or bills, ( which usually contains the NIE) together with the address, this "should" suffice. Just an idea. V

Can you contact the abogado in Marbella, email perhaps? They would have required the original NIE document and it is possibly still in their files pertaining to your transaction, ours was!

Your NIE paper means nothing, what they actually need in order to register a car for you is proof of your address which you can perfectly demonstrate, with your property deeds.

In any case there is no law which says that you have to use a dealer to register a car bought from them any Gestor should be able to do it for you. The difference is that with the dealer you can normally drive a car off the forecourt the same day, using a 3rd party will cause a small delay but if the dealer is being a jerk the Gestor route could well prove quicker than trying to get a new NIE certificate!

Hi

I've bought two cars and numerous smaller items without ever needing the original document. Mind you, I am resident - don't know if that's an issue.

Cheers

Steve
