It doesn't always mean you have demencia the tests are not always right. Every one forgets things like words and where did I put the keys  especially when your getting older. You must now look forward to your move. I am sure you will be happy in Spain.

Hi,

Having read the thread, if you don’t mind an opinion- MCI is a pretty broad diagnosis. It might be worth requesting a referral to a Psychiatry of Later Life service for a full multidisciplinary assessment at their Memory Clinic (if they have one). You are too young  for them normally, but they will often offer proper diagnostic assessments for someone in your situation. Best of luck.

If the main reason for immigrating is the weather have you considered other countries? For example, the Philippines has some good care homes and the cost of them and the cost of living, is a lot less there. The temperatures never get get as cold as in Spain over the winter. The culture there pays...

... much respect to the elderly and the people are very hospitable and friendly. Healthcare system is private, but really reasonably priced. The Philippines is obviously a lot further than Spain from Ireland, but if you have no family this may not be a problem.

One government pension is not always transferred to other countries, and nor the healthcare.   It is a different standard of health care.    Best to check.

If buying property in Asia, you will NOT own the land.

Hi all myself and my hubbie are planning to move to Spain next year from ireland (S). Will be retiring.  We plan to sell our home here.  I have recently been diagnosed with early onset dementia,  feel fine atm TG.  I have been advised to go ahead with our plans as the stress I...

... have here won't be there and will help along with the sunshine and lifestyle as I have spinal issues and arthritis.  I am fairly fit considering and our home in PF is my happy place. I need to look to future should I need it.  What is the situation with care homes  if needed.  Pretty morbid topic i know on this dark cold day in Dublin  thank you

Hi 😀

I live in Scotland.( parents were from Donegal

it’s a great idea but Have you considered just renting for winter time? Equity release on your house in Dublin would possibly enable you to do it. My husband developed dementia in his fifties til he died at 70.
I am sorry I can’t advise on care homes in Spain
We spent two winters renting an apartment in Tenerife on a very nice smallish complex with lots of English speakers.  Sunnier and warmer than Spain. It was good because we could go out every day to walk and sit on the balcony which we could not do at home and the English residents were very helpful. I wish I’d thought of it sooner.

I am in Spain at the moment. Santa Polafor the first time. Locals are lovely and helpful but do not speak English. It is very cold often at night and many places have no heating.Summers are very hot. I bought two hot water bottles😂 Next time I’ll get somewhere with heating and south facing.
Im a beginner learning Spanish but I always have to use my translate app. You would struggle with the language.
You are required to take a translator whenever you go to the doctor and unless you know for one with good Spanish you will have to pay a translator.
The summer is too hot for me

Itis also very important that your husband has support. Being a carer can sometimes be very difficult and he will need practical and emotional support

You also need a plan in case your husband becomes long term ill.
I am so sorry to put a dampener on your great idea but having cared for my husband for 15 years I know the realities. I would strongly advise you to rent.
If you are still keen to do it, definitely rent first before deciding g where to stay and stay in an English speaking community. Make sure you have a lift.

Please do private message me if you and or your husband would like to talk about it further. We could also do free What’s App phone calls.

Best wishes

Anne.

Public care intstitutions are overcrowded and have a long long waiting list. Private homes are expensive and you willl not feel well - I can tell that from my father in Law. Better forget the whole thing. Sorry to say this.

Hello my name is Belinda and I am a Registered Mental Health Nurse and have worked for many years with people living with dementia. Everyone is different in terms of the progression of this illness and some people live at home and live well with dementia for many many years. In addition if you do need extra support in later years you may well have a private carer or live in carer at your home in Spain. If necessary you may even choose to return to Ireland if you require full time residential care. At this stage I would keep all options open and continue to live as full a life as possible. Advances in the care and treatment of people living with dementia are being made all the time so my advice as a Nurse would be to continue with your plans, ensure you stay up to date with new treatment options and enjoy your life.

That’s good. I didn’t realise that. My apologise to the couple. Knowing the place already will make it so much easier. Sunshine is a huge help too

I’m glad to hear there is good support in Spain  for carers and people living with dementia.
You are right that people can live well with dementia for many years

Carer support is also very important. I organise a peer support group back home for carers which I started when I was a carer as there wasn’t anything at the time. Now luckily we have lots more dementia friendly places and local communities.

I have had tests thus week both with occupational therapist and beyropsycholigist in memory clinic. Consultant Neurologist has to review all findings plus the mild cerebral loss on MRI. I passed most of the tests just the memory test wasn't great. Not bad enough acc to neuropsychologist in his opinion to warrant a diagnosis of dementia. The Neurologist might just suggest redoing tests again inc mri in a year.  Result could be the same , worse or better. So live in the moment is how I plan to move forward. Its not all doom n gloom and with brain exercises I have been given n mindfulness , fingers crossed will be OK. I await what the Consultant says but dont feel as anxious about it as I did at start with GP diagnosis.
